Doreen Rabi, MD MSc FRCPC

Dr. Rabi is an academic Endocrinologist affiliated with the Cumming School of Medicine and the O’Brien Institute for Public Health at the University of Calgary. She is currently the Division Head of Endocrinology, holds cross-appointments as Professor in the departments of Cardiac Sciences, Medicine, and Community Health Sciences.  

Dr. Rabi has a diverse research program that focuses on the themes of equity, clinical and situational complexity.  She has established herself as a leader in clinical practice guidelines, having previously chaired the Hypertension Canada guidelines committee and has been a Methods Chair and Steering committee member of the Diabetes Canada Clinical Practice Guidelines. She is dedicated educator and mentor, a prior program director for the Leaders in Medicine Program at the Cumming School of Medicine.  She is well published and funded, having over 175 peer-reviewed publications.

Outside of work, Doreen enjoys spending time with family, finding new ways to enjoy high quality chocolate, and long walks with her big dog.

Naomi Popeski, PhD

As the Senior Research Manager for C4 and an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences (CHS) at University of Calgary, Naomi conducts health research and facilitates research collaborations and mentoring opportunities with faculty members, research assistants, students within the Department of CHS and partners within the community. Naomi’s work within the C4 research program focuses on evidence-based research to advocate and promote health equity for newcomers to Canada, optimize and establish virtual health for patients and clinical guidelines supporting diabetes. Outside work, Naomi enjoys playing tennis, reading, and spending time outdoors with her dog.

Stacy Kozak, MSc

Stacy Kozak holds a Bachelor of Physical Education (BPE) and a Master of Science (MSc) from the University of Calgary. She brings a diverse background in injury rehabilitation, occupational health and safety, healthcare leadership, and research, including research management. During her time as a Senior Research Associate with C4, Stacy has led and supported mixed-methods projects focused on digital health, virtual care, and student safety. She is particularly passionate about mentoring C4 students and supporting the advancement of their projects and learning. Outside of work, Stacy enjoys spending time outdoors with her partner and her dog.

Julie Babione, MSc

Julie Babione is a Human-Centred Design Research Associate with a background in biology and computer science. She wears multiple hats as a user experience (UX) and human-centred design (HCD) designer with software and web-development experience having led and contributed to a range of digital health research, design, and development projects, translating qualitative research into software requirements and other design artefacts. Julie has also completed certificates in graphics design and implementation science certification. As a complex care patient and thyroid cancer survivor herself, Julie brings her unique combination of skills and perspectives to the table. In her free time, Julie enjoys knitting and spending time with her husband and her two little dogs.

Tasmira Mohib

Tasmira Mohib is currently completing an MSc in Community Health Sciences and contributes to C4’s research activities.

Nicole Cohen

Nicole Cohen is a graduate student with the Canadian Collaboration for Complex Care (C4), where she is committed to advancing quality patient experiences in healthcare. Her research interests focus on medically complex patients, the impacts on caregivers, and improving healthcare accessibility for diverse populations, including newcomers and refugees. Nicole is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Community Health Sciences (Clinical Epidemiology) at the University of Calgary. She graduated summa cum laude from York University with an Honours BSc in Global Health and continues to pursue research while volunteering with the Alberta Children’s Hospital’s community-based hospice program. Outside of research, Nicole enjoys creative pursuits and spending time with her family.

Fatima Khan, MBBS

Fatima Khan is a trainee with the Canadian Collaboration for Complex Care (C4), where she contributes to collaborative research focused on health equity, healthcare accessibility, and improving care for diverse communities. Her work is guided by a simple but important question: If access to healthcare is considered a human right, who is considered human enough to have that right? She is particularly interested in women’s health, immigrant health, and reducing barriers to care for underserved populations. Fatima is an international medical graduate from Pakistan and a graduate student in Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary. She has clinical training experience and is pursuing a career that combines public health, clinical care, and research. In addition to her research activities, Fatima volunteers in the Emergency Department at Foothills Hospital, with the WeCare Workplace Foundation, and in diabetes education and translation support initiatives. She has also contributed to healthcare awareness programs, including breast cancer awareness campaigns.

Fobete Dingha

Fobete Dingha serves as a Community Advisor with the Canadian Collaboration for Complex Care (C4), where he provides critical community perspectives that help ensure research and program initiatives are relevant, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of diverse populations. Drawing on his extensive experience in newcomer engagement, public policy, and community development, he supports C4’s commitment to meaningful partnerships and community-informed approaches to health research.

Fobete is the Community Relations and Engagement Specialist at the Centre for Newcomers (CFN), where he builds partnerships that strengthen support for newcomers, refugees, and diverse communities. He holds master’s degrees in Rural Development and Global Political Economy and is a graduate of the Max Bell Foundation Public Policy Fellowship and the University of Calgary’s Patient and Community Engagement Research (PaCER) program.

A respected community leader and advocate, Fobete also serves as Chair of the Citizen Advisory Committee for Correctional Service Canada and Board Chair of the African Advisory Board for the Calgary Police Service. He is a strong champion of community-centred leadership and believes that lived experience, collaboration, and diverse perspectives are essential to creating meaningful and sustainable change.

Mujtaba Arshad

Mujtaba has been a patient partner with C4 since 2022, sharing lived experience and insights into the challenges patients encounter when navigating healthcare systems. He has also contributed as a patient partner on a variety of projects with Alberta Health Services and the University of Calgary since 2021. Mujtaba serves on the Patient and Family Advisory Council and the Quality and Safety Management Systems Leadership Committee with Acute Care Alberta. He is grateful for opportunities to support local organizations through volunteer work and has the privilege to be employed by the Distress Centre Calgary.
